What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is profit as a percentage of cost. Margin is profit as a percentage of selling price. A 50 percent markup is only a 33.3 percent margin.

How do I convert markup to margin?

Margin = markup / (1 + markup). For a 50 percent markup, margin = 0.5 / 1.5 = 33.3 percent.

How do I convert margin to markup?

Markup = margin / (1 - margin). For a 40 percent margin, markup = 0.4 / 0.6 = 66.7 percent.
